  Text Passing of Christopher Firth

One of Durham's oldest and most respected citizens passed over to the great majority on Tuesday evening in the person of Christopher Firth, in his 84th year. For several months he has been in poor health with anaemia, but bedfast only the last two months, when it was evident he was gradually sinking. His son, Sergt. Sam Firth, returned from overseas at noon that day, in time to be recognized by his parent before death.

The deceased was born in Whixley, Yorkshire, England in 1835 and was married to Eliza Bowes in 1856 who died a few years after, a son Harry now in Toronto surviving. 57 years ago in Feb. he married Elizabeth Humphrey, who survives him and is quite cheerful through not in good health. In 1872 they emigrated to Canada, spending five years at Hagersville, then moved to the 3rd con, N.D.R., Glenelg and later to their well known home on the Durham Road, three miles east of town. Ten years ago they retired from the farm and moved into Durham.

Ten children were born to them by the second marriage, two sons Jesse dying 28 years and Joe 3 years ago. Those surviving are Wm in Michigan, Chris. E. at Niagra Falls, N.Y., Alex, principal of Orangeville School, Sam of Vancouver just home from overseas, Ben D. of Vancouver, Mrs Turner of Detroit, Miss Kate at home and Mrs Carothers of Toronto. 28 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive him.

Mr Firth was a kindly genial type of Englishman, with always a cheery word or joke for all. He was widely known, a great nature student, and an ardent lover of birds and flowers. For many years here he was Secy.-Treas. of the Horticultural Society and has always been a member. From 1907 to 1911 he was Secy-Treas. of South Grey Ag. Society, being previously Vice-Pres, and since then Hon. Vice Pres. The deceased was an expert taxidermist, and many homes in South Grey have mementos of his workmanship in the form of stuffed birds or animals. In religion Mr Firth was a member of the Anglican church and Conservative in politics.

The funeral will take place at 2.30 p.m. Friday afternoon when Rev. F.G. Hardy will conduct services. The Review joins with the whole community in sympathy to the surviving life partner and family, in the loss of a loved and public-spirited husband, father and citizen.
