William H. Firth
Falls native was chemist, founded Firth Jewelers

William H. Firth, 90, of 101st Street, died Saturday (Sept. 4, 1999) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Firth was born April 3, 1909, in Niagara Falls, the son of William and Jane (McBride) Firth. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School.

He married Helen V. Olejarz on Sept. 7, 1936, in Holy Trinity Church.

He worked as a research chemist for 18 yeras at Globar. He founded Firth Jewelers on East Falls Street in 1946. It moved to Military Road in 1973. He was a jeweler, watchmaker and clockmaker.

He was an amateur radio operator and received his license from the Federal Communications Commission. He was issued the call letters K2SQL.

He was a member of the American Radio Relay League, the Echo Singing Societ, the Buffalo Civic Opera and Woodmen of the World.

Mr. Firth was a member of St. Mary's of the Cataract Church, where he was also a member of the choir.

Family members said he was a living grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Firth of Grand Island and William Firth III of Youngstown; a daughter, Katherine Ziarno of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Eleanor Price and Jeanne Lopano, both of Niagara Falls; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Bruce Firth.

There will be no prior visitation. Monsignor William Stillwell will celebrate a Memorial Mass at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 Fourth St.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Niagara Chapter of the American Red Cross, 719 Ashland Ave., Niagara Falls, N.Y. 14301.

Dear brother of Eleanor Price and Jeanne (Edwards) Lopano both of Niagara Falls. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren an many nieces and nephews. Son of the late William and Jane (McBride) Firth, Sr. and brother of the late Bruce Firth. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday, September 11 at 9:30 am at St. Mary's of the Cataract Church, 259-4th Street with Monsignor William Stillwell officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Interment in Memorial Park Cememtary, Lewiston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Niagara Chapter to the American Red Cross, 719-Ashland Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14301 or to a charity of one's choice.
